During paint construction, many people consider primer unnecessary, believing that a high-quality topcoat alone can meet wall requirements. So can we skip applying primer? In the following content, the editor from Runli will explain this in detail.
After years of effort, Runli New Materials has received recognition from various parties. It has successively won numerous honors including “Top 10 Fast-Growing Coatings Brands”, “Scientific Research and Innovation Award”, “China Top 500 Quality Enterprises”, “Enterprise Abiding by Contracts for Eight Consecutive Years”, executive director unit of China Architectural Coatings Circulation Association, and China Environmental Labeling Product Certification. These are not only recognition of Runli from the industry and society, but also a driving force for progress.

Architectural Primer
Primer can be skipped, but omitting it will reduce the construction effect and service life of the topcoat. Functionally, topcoat focuses more on decorative and appearance effects, while primer emphasizes improving adhesion, anti-corrosion and anti-alkali properties. Therefore, primer plays a vital role in the paint system.
No matter how good the topcoat is, it cannot replace primer. Primer functions to seal, resist alkali and enhance the adhesion of topcoat. Without primer on the wall, problems such as wrinkling and uneven color of the paint film are likely to occur.
Walls in many households are alkaline and prone to alkali efflorescence. Strong alkalinity can cause chemical degradation of the resin in the coating, accelerate the aging of the paint film, and shorten the service life of the coating. Using primer provides significant protection for the topcoat.
Anti-alkali primer has strong penetration and can effectively seal the capillary pores of the substrate, preventing alkali and water-soluble salts inside the substrate from seeping to the surface through capillary action with moisture. It also avoids efflorescence, protects the topcoat from chemical erosion, prevents excessive absorption of topcoat by porous substrates, improves the decorative effect of topcoat and reduces topcoat consumption.
